Bermondsey - Village Life in the City

The Art of Living Local

With world-class galleries, artisan producers and indie shops at every turn, Bermondsey has a cool, eclectic vibe, with the best  of London on your doorstep.

Once a centre for merchant trading, manufacturing and tanning, London SE1 is now characterised by the impressive 95-storey Shard. But it’s at street level that you truly see the personality and village like charm of the area, with trendy cafes, cosy restaurants and hidden green spaces occupying almost every square inch.

Morning Coffee & Croissants

Family-run bakery and patisserie, the talented chefs and bakers at Comptoir hand-make all products each day in their kitchen on Maltby Street. Here you can indulge in fresh loaves and classic pastries, plus a host of other sweet and savoury baked treats.

Bermondsey Apartments

Your Local Grocery Store

Sister to the B Street Deli, the Giddy Grocer is a 21st century grocery store with a nostalgic sensibility. Sourcing primarily from small, artisan British producers, they champion newcomers to the market, particularly those that share their ethos of quality and sustainability.

“We want to serve our community whilst making grocery food and drink shopping an enticing and friendly experience.” Christine Hall and Simon Lyons, Proprietor

A Bermondsey Institution

The Garrison gastropub is known for its charming vintage look and buzzy yet relaxed atmosphere. Get comfy in one of the cosy booths to enjoy tasty, heart-warming contemporary British dishes made from good quality seasonal produce. It also opens at 10am for Saturday brunches!

The Perfect Mix

A stylish destination just south of the City, The Bermondsey Arts Club & Cocktail Bar is a former public conveniences turned mixology den. On descending the stairwell, the elegant 1930’s style cocktail bar serves a meticulously crafted menu of drinks, with the smooth sounds of jazz in the background.

A Celebration of Fashion

With its vivid orange façade, the Fashion & Textile Museum is a wonderful place to visit if you are interested in the history of fashion. Located in a beautiful old Victorian school building, the museum showcases garments from the Victorian age right up to the 2000s.

Contemporary Classics

The contemporary White Cube Gallery showcases new artists and exhibitions every few months. The gallery is part of the famous White Cube art institution, which has been putting on exhibitions since the 1990s. The Bermondsey branch is home to an impressive collection of modern art, including pieces by famous artists such as Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol.

Turning up the Heat

London Glassblowing’s chic gallery space sits in front of a 1,000-degree working furnace that has been turning out unique objets d’art for 40 years. The exquisite glass art on display is constantly changing, with visitors also being able to watch the artists practise their craft in the studio that lies beyond its white walls.

“In the winter, it’s absolutely the cosiest place in town, but on an average day you walk into a large, airy gallery space which is filled with colour. Colour is one of the things we’re best known for, with people often saying ‘I had no idea you could do this sort of thing with glass.’”
Peter Layton, Artist and Founder

A Haven for Foodies

Maltby Street Market is a popular weekend market that stretches the length of Ropewalk – a private yard belonging to long established salvage and reclamation company, Lassco. From a modest start the market has grown to become the stomping ground for London’s burgeoning street food movement.

Stalls are arranged along one side of the narrow yard, while bars and eateries are nestled within the seven Victorian Railway Arches that run the length of the site. A true original, the quality and diversity of their traders is second to none, and through a gently rotating roster of visiting stall-holders, the managers of the market work hard to maintain freshness and novelty.

A Historic Gem

As one of London’s oldest and largest food markets, Borough Market has over 100 delicatessens, butchers, fishmongers and cheesemakers, all selling fresh produce and artisanal delicacies on a daily basis.

With a bustling collection of street-food stands, selling everything from fresh oysters to authentic curries, it’s where locals come to buy their groceries and where foodies love to indulge.
